Slam Champs

2011 Slam Champs CFSW 2011 Champions, the Edmonton Breath in Poetry slam team, formed in April, 2011, and is comprised of Mary Pinkoski, Ahmed Ali, Liam Coady, Colin Matty and Chris Krueger (alt).The team competed against 19 other teams across Canada and emerged as the 2011 Canadian Festival of Spoken Word Champions. Each member brings an undeniably dynamic blend of poetry and performance that lead to this year's victory in Toronto, ON. Bringing their unique spoken word to the festival stage, the team was also recognized by their peers in the Poet's Choice Awards as the Most Admirable Team of 2011 CFSW. Mary Pinkoski was also awarded Most Valuable Poet of the festival and Ahmed Ali's line "I Am Africa" was chosen as the Line Most Likely to Appear on a T-shirt. This is only the second year that Edmonton has competed at the national festival and we are extremely proud and honored to have brought the championship home to Western Canada.
 
Open Secret Born in Nigeria, and raised on three different continents, Ikenna "OpenSecret" Onyegbula has been a spoken word artist for four years, having begun competing locally in the Ottawa Slam Poetry scene in the fall of 2007. Since then, he has competed, featured and performed consistently in numerous venues across Canada and the United States. He is a member of two different Canadian National Slam Poetry championship teams and a three time finalist at the national level, whilst representing Ottawa. In 2011, he became the inaugural Canadian Individual Slam Poetry Champion in the Finals held in Vancouver, BC. As a member of the acclaimed four member spoken word troupe, The Recipe, Ikenna further develops his craft and enhances his passion for performance poetry, while as an avid writer, he has self published three chapbooks, Until, September and If Prayers Were Answered. He is currently working on his first full anthology of poetry and on his first novel.
